We acquired our first Newfoundland through Newf rescue in Wisconsin.  He was a four year old brown male named Yogi and we loved him to pieces. He was not a show dog but he had the wonderful Newf temperament and the true water rescue instinct, typical of the breed.  We'd only had him a few months when he dove, fully extended, off the dock to rescue our daughter and her cousin.  He thought they were drowning because they started screaming when they jumped out of the boat into the chilly water to go water skiing.  Yogi hadn’t ever gone swimming when we were at the lake, all he cared to do was wade in to cool off.  We were thrilled to see the essence of the breed when he dove in and started swimming out to the girls.  It's a sight we will never forget. 

Needless to say we were hooked on Newfoundlands.  That was in 1992,  and in 1994 we bought our first Newf , Ollie, who I sincerely hoped would be a show dog. For various reasons he wasn't, but again, we loved him dearly.  I learned a lot from that experience and did more research the next time we sought to buy a show dog.  We lost Ollie at age 11 and will miss him forever.  

In April 1996 we bought a show prospect, Ch. Teddy Tug’s Travelin’ Man, who easily  finished his championship,  owner handled by me, a rookie.  We bought another male, Ch. Buddybear’s On The Road Again, who finished easily owner-handled. After that, we bought our foundation bitch, Nakiska's Gift of Joy “Susy”.  We were so lucky, Susy sailed through all her health clearances and was a wonderful producer for us. She produced  three champions, with several more on their way. We lost Susy unexpectedly after a short illness. She reigned supreme in our household and we miss her terribly.  I learned a tremendous amount of information about Newfoundlands as I worked my way through the process of selecting a stud dog, whelping, and raising puppies.  We were very fortunate in that, Ingrid Lyden of Nakiska Newfoundlands, gave me a lot of help.  I continue to learn more all of the time.

We now have two of Susy's daughters, Ch. Kettle Hill’s First Lady “Mamie” and Kettle Hill’s Kayenne “Kayenne”, and her grandson, Kettle Hill’s Ramblin’ Man “Robby”.  They are wonderfully healthy and typey.

We live in Wisconsin in the Northern Kettle Moraine, situated about an hour north of Milwaukee.  It's in an area that was carved out by glaciers so it's hilly and very pretty with a lot of woods and lakes.   It's a good place for us and our Newfoundlands.  Thanks for visiting our website!
